We all heard DOT, DILG, and DENR receommending to the President a total closure of Boracay.
They have a job to do so, so as all the Boracay Employess. Lives are affected. Yes, to closing to those that have violated until such time that they have made the needed rectification to be compliant. Why penalize those who follow the rules. WE SHOULD show the public the good Boracay. If Boracay needs to be cleaned, let's do it! Involve the stakeholders, they are much willing to assist. Government should have granted an audience with the stakeholders and have an honest and sincere discussion. We are all for Boracay's Suistainability. It is very important to preserve it's environment and make it clean and healthy for the local people, it's wildlife and waters for this generation to enjoy as well as our children's children. It is our prayer that government re-consider an alternative move to not totally close this paradise. |

HSMA STATEMENT |
We, the HSMA - an organization of hotel sales and marketing professionals composed of 120 member hotels and resorts all over the Philippines express our appreciation for President Duterte’s call to address the long-standing problems in the premier resort island of Boracay.
We agree that the crisis has reached critical proportions and an immediate solution is needed through the joint efforts of the DOT, DILG and DENR.
HSMA endorses the closure and rectification of non-compliant establishments in Boracay and support and uphold properties that follow sanitation and environmental policies and allow them to continue operating their businesses.
Government agencies need to address the issues namely audit and accreditation of all tourist establishments on the island and release a list of non compliant hotels to warn clients (intl and local) to desist from patronizing them until they follow the law.
We stand with our colleagues in HSMA dubbed #oneboracay :
O-ne stand.#oneboracay
N-on closure of Boracay to ensure that employees continue their livelihood and are protected during the rehabilitation ; manage the bookings already confirmed of local and international visitors during the rehabilitation period.
E-nlighten government officials of hotels and resorts sales and marketing situation in order to act as one and mitigate negative impact of rehabilitation
B-e vigilant in protecting the island of Boracay consistently named as best island by global travel companies and ensure its preservation for all generations
O-rganize Boracay as a sustainable tourism zone. Stakeholders and Tourists will be educated on how to protect the island for everyone to enjoy.
R-eport and monitoring system to be implemented to eradicate abuses and violations against environmental and security breaches
A-ggressive marketing campaigns to inform the public on the rehabilitation plan, schedule and programs so vacationers will be guided on how to enjoy Boracay during the rehabilitation
C-ooperation between public and private sectors is imperative with close communication to ensure the success of the Boracay Project and beyond
A-im for a reinvigorated Boracay that will be safe, secure, special, spectacular and stunning and continue to be a top Philippine destination for always
Y-OU and I have this one golden chance!
Our recommendations :
- To gather all stakeholders, principally owners and general managers to discuss mitigation plans, communicate the stages of the rehabilitation or closure by sections to concerned parties, employees, tourism partners etc
- To lay out plans for rehabilitation and dismantling of structures violating easement laws
- To relocate reservations of guests in properties that will be affected by the rehab works
- To manage employees paid and unpaid leaves, rotations and wages during closure for those who will be affected
- To prepare Re-Opening Plans and Programs for those that were closed down
- To prepare a Boracay Project Bash to announce the plan and organize an upbeat campaign that everyone will look forward to and welcome the repair and maintenance work. Use catchy slogans “Boracay Becomes Better” ; “Boracay’s Best is Coming” to capture the positive tone of the program and downplay the hardships, construction, disruption etc.
- To organize a formal announcement of the completion of rehabilitation and introduce a new and better Boracay with week-long island fiestas with special reopening promotions and gifts and thank you parties. A joyful relaunch is in order.
